TL;DR
  • For MDIs: shake, slow deep inhale with actuation, hold breath ~10 seconds, and consider a spacer.
  • For DPIs: fast, deep inhalation without a spacer; do not exhale into the device.
  • Rinse mouth after ICS use to reduce thrush risk; check technique regularly.

Metered‑dose inhalers (MDI)

  1. Shake, exhale fully, seal lips, start to inhale slowly and press the canister, continue slow deep breath.
  2. Hold breath about 10 seconds, then exhale gently. Wait ~30–60 seconds between puffs if using more than one.
  3. Use a spacer if coordination is difficult or for ICS delivery.

Dry‑powder inhalers (DPI)

  1. Prepare a dose per device instructions. Exhale away from device, then inhale quickly and deeply.
  2. Do not blow into the device. Check dose counter and storage conditions.
